Overtime, your pearly whites can be discolored due to the consumption of stain-causing food and drinks such as coffee, tea, and wine. Smoking also darkens your teeth. Even the medications that you take and some illnesses cause discoloration. Dr. John M. Hucklebridge of Plano Smile Studio offers two ways to whiten your teeth: In-office and at-home whitening treatment.

1. In-office whitening

In-office whitening is the quickest way to brighten your smile. The process takes about an hour to finish (plus additional time for checkup and cleaning). It includes take-home trays to help you maintain the shade of your teeth.

The procedure requires a full examination of your mouth and a thorough cleaning of your teeth. The dentist will examine your teeth and gums and check for signs of decay, sensitivity, gum inflammation, and other abnormalities. This should be addressed first before giving you options.

Take note that teeth whitening is not recommended for

  • pregnant women and breast feeding moms.
  • kids below 16 years.
  • individuals with allergies, gum disease, cavities, and exposed tooth roots.
  • patients with dental restorations (fillings, bridges, and crowns).

First, the dentist will clean your teeth by removing the plaque and tartar. Then he’ll gently apply the bleaching solution directly on your teeth. Don’t worry; your gums and lips are protected during the application. He’ll also give you take-home trays to maintain the color of your teeth.

2. At-home whitening

At-home whitening includes take-home solution with custom-made mouthpiece. Your health care professional will give you instructions on how to use the kit. It’ll take about two to four weeks before you can see results.
