Most patients are unfamiliar with the process of extracting wisdom teeth, so we’ve written this blog to provide to provide you with a bit more information on that subject.
Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?
We hear this question an awful lot, especially from patients who’ve always experienced the pleasure of healthy teeth. The truth is wisdom teeth can cause you a lot of pain and suffering in certain cases, at the Plano Smile Studio in Plano, TX, we don’t want our patients to go through that.
When wisdom teeth don’t have the space they need to grow in correctly, a lot of things can happen. The teeth will continue to grow and they can get stuck in your gums, or even turn sideways as they develop.
When wisdom teeth get stuck in your gums (impacted), a lot of other negative things can happen. For instance, impacted wisdom teeth can cause the development of cysts or tumor. And wisdom teeth that are growing in wrong can damage other teeth; or just sponge up enough bacteria to cause an infection.
How Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?
There are two ways to extract wisdom teeth. There is a simple extraction for teeth that aren’t impacted. For impacted wisdom teeth, we perform what’s called a surgical extraction. Your extraction will vary depending on how your wisdom teeth have grown in.
We can perform a simple extraction if a portion of the tooth is visible from the outside of your gums. If your tooth is impacted, we will need to remove it surgically. Either way, we will make sure you are sedated and numb before we begin the extraction. Extractions are quite, and only require antibiotics and couple days to rest to recover from.
Extracting problem-causing wisdom teeth is an important way to ensure a healthy dental life. Even if you’ve never visited a dentist, or have visited one since you were young, you will want to visit us if you are feeling pain in your gums.
