The end goal of just about every dentist is to help you maintain a healthy smile that you can be proud of! One way we do that is with dental crowns.
Now, teeth crowns are necessary whenever a tooth is too damaged or broken to be left on it’s own. Sometimes this damage is accidental, like with a broken tooth. Sometimes it is caused by an old filling that weakened the tooth. Sometimes it’s just a matter of decay. Regardless of the cause, this tooth needs to be reinforced so that it can continue to serve you as a part of your healthy smile. So, we place a dental crown.
How Does the Crown Work?
A crown is a made of gold, ceramic, or porcelain, depending on where in the mouth it is placed and your own preferences. It is a cap that will fit completely over the tooth. In order for it to fit in an already tight place, we have to remove some of the enamel from the already damaged tooth. We then use special cement to secure the crown to the damaged tooth, leaving you with a restoration that will function and look just like your natural tooth!
Whenever possible, we want to preserve the natural teeth in your mouth so that we can preserve the natural shape of your face. A dental crown is used for this purpose, but we can also use crowns for strictly cosmetic improvements, too!
