Dentophobia. The fear of dentists.
We might not be feared quite as much as clowns, but if the thought of being in a dental chair under the procedure lights makes you squirm, you are not alone.
Many adults suffer from dentophobia, sometimes caused by urban legends, media misreporting, things they’ve heard from friends, or previous negative experiences at dental offices. It is even estimated by the University of Washington that as many as three in four adults hold some fear of the dentist.
But at the Plano Smile Studio, you have nothing to fear but fear itself. Our top-notch team practices a new form of dentistry; gone are the days where a big, scary syringe was the only form of dental pain relief. Today you can experience sedation dentistry in a clean, comfortable, safe setting in Plano, TX.
In today’s blog post we’re going to look at some of your options for pain free, sedation dentistry, as well as look as some of the drawbacks of avoiding or putting off needed dental work due to fear.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
At Plano Smile Studio, we offer two kinds of sedation to our patients to help with their dental anxiety. Most patients are candidates for either option, depending on your needs and desires.
Oral sedation places you in a restful state to help relieve your anxiety before a procedure. During the procedure, you are still responsive and can hold a conversation. You don’t lose any time (from being unconscious) and are never unaware of your surroundings.
The sedation is achieved by prescribing a mild anti-anxiety medicine to be taken around a half-hour before the procedure begins. Simply take the pill, sit back and relax, we do the rest.
But what if the thought of being aware of any dental work makes uncomfortable? At Plano Smile Studio we have a solution for that as well.
If you’d prefer to be unaware of your surroundings, and not notice any dental work happening, IV sedation is an option. A carefully monitored series of drugs are administered to you intravenously. With this sedation, you will enter a deep sleep and not hear or see any of the dental procedure.
You simply fall asleep and wake-up with a beautiful new smile.
Whatever option you choose, you can rest assured knowing that you are in a clean, comfortable, and safe surrounding being taken care of by highly-trained professionals.
And We Mean Clean, Comfortable, and Safe!
Our office is in a beautiful, spa-like setting that will immediately put your mind at ease.
Our staff always wears fresh (new for each patient) gloves, masks, and protective eyewear after thoroughly washing their hands before and after every procedure.
All dental instruments are mechanically sterilized in top of the line equipment after every treatment, and all other surfaces and equipment in the treatment are also thoroughly sterilized.
Needles, waste and contaminated material are all properly disposed off in specialized containers.
Water lines all use sterile water and are disinfected daily, with special barrier techniques to eliminate the possibility of any cross-contamination.
Why You Shouldn’t Put Off Necessary Dental Work
Not only is it estimated that three in four patients have some dental fear; it’s also estimated by the University of Washington that as much as 15 percent of the population puts off necessary dental work due to this fear.
When you put-off dental work, you greatly increase your risk of tooth decay and oral diseases. Not only that, but poor oral health can be an indicator for potentially life-treating ailments as grave as lung infections, cancer, or heart disease.
Having a dental professional notice these conditions in your mouth could literally be a matter of life or death. Regular visits to the Plano Smile Studio not only keeps your mouth healthy, it keeps your whole body healthy.
Let us take care of you in our clean, comfortable, and safe environment in Plano, TX and give you the smile you’ve been dreaming of.
