A Relaxing Dental Experience this Halloween

What are you afraid of this Halloween season? Maybe you caught a marathon of the Michael Myers movies and shivered a little bit. Maybe you ventured over to haunted house, and paid someone to make you scream. Halloween can be a fun time to be frightened.

But for millions of Americans, fear is regular part of their lives. They are simply afraid of the dentist. That fear may even lead them to put off needed dental work. This procrastination can turn a really small problem into a much larger one. If you aren’t seeing a dentist every six months for a dental cleaning, plaque is probably accumulating on your teeth. Plaque will eventually lead to tooth decay; tooth decay often requires a filling or root canal to save the tooth.

At Plano Smile Studio in Plano, TX, we want you to know that you no longer have to be afraid of the dentist. We offer a number of services designed to keep you at ease throughout all your dental work. In today’s post of our dental health blog, we want to share four reasons why you don’t need to fear making an appointment at our comfortable and modern office.

Reason #1: Our Office Has a Spa Atmosphere

At Plano Smile Studio, we have gone above and beyond in an attempt to provide a relaxing environment. Our office does not feel like a typical dentist office; from the moment you walk-in, you’ll feel relaxed and at ease. We carefully designed our office to provide a zen-like atmosphere; we also play soothing music under soft mood lighting.

Our staff members are also accustomed to treating patients with dental fears and anxieties. We will answer any questions you have about your procedure, and fully explain every detail of your procedure to you in language you can understand. We also have a “one patient at a time” policy; this means you will always receive individualized and attentive dental care.

Reason #2: We Use Stringent Infection Control

Your safety is always our top priority at Plano Smile Studio. Every day, we sterilize the water lines we use in our office. We also use disposable items and materials to prevent the spread of bacteria. When throw away all medical waste into special containers to prevent contamination. Our staff is also taught the latest in infection control and sterilization techniques; always making sure they wash their hands regularly.

Reason #3: We Use Advanced Technology

Dental technology has come a long way in recent years. Many stories you hear from others about painful experiences at the dentist office were the result of outdated technology. At Plano Smile Studio, we use cutting-edge technology and the latest procedures to ensure we can provide you with a comfortable experience. We are always precise in planning your treatment, and can offer virtually painless procedures.

Reason #4: We Offer Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is designed to help nervous or fearful patients relax during their procedure. We can prescribe you a mild sedative to take about a half-hour before your procedure. You simply swallow the pill then sit-back and relax. Many patients even fall asleep during sedation dentistry. So quit worrying about dental work and start relaxing during your dental appointments!

A Halloween Costume for Your Smile

What’s the best Halloween costume you can think of? Maybe you plan to dress as a werewolf. Or maybe your daughter is going to dress like one of the princesses from “Frozen.” What about your son? Maybe he can put-on a muscle suit and go as WWE United States Champion John Cena.

During the Halloween season, it’s always fun to dress-up and pretend for a while. But come November 1st, you’re back to your plain, regular self. (Unless you plan on celebrating Day of the Dead as well.) But what if you could change one part of your appearance for good?

Many Americans would choose to change their smile. They may even feel embarrassed about certain aspects of their teeth; wishing they could make them whiter or more shapely. But unlike Halloween costumes, smile makeovers are not just a fantasy.

At Plano Smile Studio in Plano, TX, we can makeover your smile with a wide range of cosmetic dentistry options. We offer many different and wonderful solutions for teeth damaged by disease, decay, an accident, or even neglect. No matter what your smile needs to restore it’s brilliance, we can help!

In today’s post of our dental health blog, we want to tell you a little bit more about the services we can provide if you’re embarrassed by your smile. We can provide procedures like Professional Tooth Whitening which allow you to see amazing results in just a day. Or we can cover misshapen or broken teeth with porcelain veneers. We can even combine several different services to give you a customized smile make-over!

Professional Teeth Whitening

Professional Teeth Whitening is probably the most popular of all our cosmetic dentistry options. Many patients have yellow or discolored teeth that make them embarrassed to smile. This stains can be caused by many different behaviors. If you smoke; drink alcohol, tea, or coffee; eat candy or other brightly colored foods, you may be risk for stains on the enamel of your teeth.

But we can restore your smile’s brilliance with just a single appointment. We offer the Zoom! teeth whitening system of in-office teeth whitening. This in-office, laser-assisted procedure can have your teeth looking several shades brighter in just about an hour. We also offer take-home whitening kits if your prefer to whiten in your own home.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin shell laminates which we bond to the front of your teeth. Veneers are an excellent tool for covering a variety of dental flaws. We can use them to mask deeply stained teeth that are resistant to whitening. We can also use them to repair cracks or chips in your teeth. We can even close gaps between your teeth with veneers.

We use custom Empress porcelain veneers. These veneers actually mimic the properties of the enamel they are placing. Best of all, there are extremely strong and durable. Empress veneers have been shown in studies to be about twice as standard veneers. In addition, Empress veneers only require minimal reduction of your natural teeth to install.

Smile Makeovers

We can also combine a host of cosmetic dental procedures to create a customized smile makeover just for you. We will sit-down with you and plan out the treatment, step by step. We are one of very few offices in the area to offer so many different cosmetic dental services. That means you never have to worry about us hard-selling a procedure that’s not perfect for you and your smile goals.

If we need to give a makeover to heavily decayed teeth, we can combine tooth-colored fillings with dental crowns and veneers. If you have missing teeth and stained teeth, we can combine professional teeth whitening with dental implants. The possibilities for an individualized, custom smile are truly endless.

A Scary Link Between Headaches and TMJ Disorder

In life, headaches can be terrible to deal with. You might even try to tough them out or even walk them off. But sometimes they just keep coming back for more; and sometimes they get increasingly worse.

Don’t ignore your headaches. They very well may be a signal from your body that something is wrong. If you’ve been experiencing frequent headaches you may wonder what is causing them.

Maybe you start at your doctor’s office. After a lot of back and forth, you just leave with a prescription for painkillers. But wouldn’t it be nice to treat the root cause of many headaches? Headaches are often caused by problems with your temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

Let’s take some time to look at TMJ disorders. At the Plano Smile Studio in Plano, TX, we have years of experience in treating TMJ disorders. We want to help get you back on your fight, and be headache free. In today’s blog post we’re going to look at TMJ treatments as well as describe some treatments that are available for them.

Signs You May Be Suffering from a TMJ Disorder

Headaches linked with TMJ disorders often manifest with certain symptoms. Well these post is in no way exhaustive, we want to describe some of these symptoms to you. That way, you can decide if you think you may be at risk for a TMJ disorder.

Headaches caused by by TMJ disorder often include pain in or around the ear. Sometimes this pain may even begin to spreading to the face. You may even feel neck or shoulder aches at times.

Soreness in your jaw is also indicative of a TMJ disorder. If your jaw muscles feel tender, take note. Your jaw may even seem to get stuck, lock in place, or go out of place, ouch. It may also make a sort of clicking or popping noise when you open or close your mouth.

Finally, if you have difficulty opening your mouth you may have a TMJ disorder. This symptom can also include pain when you yawn, chew, or just open your mouth widely.

Treating Your TMJ Disorder

If you have had any of the symptoms described above, we encourage you to pick on the phone and call our office. We can schedule an appointment to screen you for TMJ disorders.

During your screening, we will look at a your jaw and examine your teeth. We may also take images of your jaw to help us discover what’s happening inside your jaw joint. The screening is fairly brief, and if we discover signs of a TMJ disorder, we can begin treatment for TMJ disorders.
We can start with a conservative treatment approach. This involves teaching you how to rest your jaw effectively. This simple step can save your TMJ joint from extreme movements and sometime relieve your pain and headaches.

If simple treatments are insufficient, we can also take a few more aggressive steps to treat your TMJ disorders. Before we begin any of these measures, we will advise of you of their pros and cons. At Plano Smile Studio in Plano, TX, we believe an informed patient is a happy patient.

We may set you up with a night guard. Sometimes TMJ disorders are brought on my clenching or grinding your teeth at night while you sleep. In these cases, a night guard can be custom-fitted to your teeth. A night guard relieves much of the pain associated with TMJ disorders, while helping you get a better night’s sleep.

Lastly, we also offer surgical options for extreme cases of TMJ disorder. Will advise you about these procedures during your appointment; we generally consider jaw surgery to be the last possible option and will try other methods first.

Five Tips to Finding the Right Dentist

Are you looking for a dentist for yourself and your family in Plano, TX? You have many options around town! With so many options, it can be difficult to know who to call and who to avoid! We recommend that you take some time before making a final decision.

You see, partnering with a new dentist is the beginning of a relationship. You will see this person and their staff at least twice a year, and you will be trusting those individuals with one of the most vulnerable areas of your body: your mouth!

You need to make the right selection, which is one reason why we decided to put together a guide to help you with this process. We have selected five questions for you to ask yourself. These five questions will be your guide to choosing the best dentist for your family!

1. Is the Office Comfortable?

Comfort cannot be overly-emphasized. The way you feel when you are in an office will definitely have an impact on your experience there. We are talking about two types of comfort: emotional and physical.

An emotionally comfortable office will make you feel like you are in a place of trust. You won’t be worried about being judged or made to feel like you have done something wrong. You might be anxious at the dental office, but an emotionally comfortable office will ease some of that anxiety and tension.

A physically comfortable office is a nice place to be! You should feel peace and comfort while you are in the waiting room as well as in the patient chair. The office should feel like somewhere that you want to be! If the office feels too sterile or cold, you won’t be able to relax for your appointment, and that can lead to other areas of discomfort.

2. Is the Office Up-to-date?

This one can be difficult to gauge, especially if you are not an expert in the area of dental care, which most of us aren’t! You can tell pretty quickly, though, if a dentist is at least attempting to keep up with current trends in dentistry and technology.

The dentist’s office workers will have fairly current computers and technology at their fingertips, and the office tools will be advanced. You might see digital cameras, specials screens, lasers, etc to help the dentist perform dental procedures with more ease and comfort for the patient!

An office that is still run primarily by paper, pencil, and old-school tools is not a place you want to take your family. The people might be great, but your experience will suffer in the long run.

3. Is the Staff Helpful?

Your relationship with the dentist is extremely important, but you won’t always speak with him/her. Most of the time, you will speak with the rest of the staff to have your questions answered, get help on forms, and set up appointments.

You can tell a lot about a dentist by how the staff acts and how the staff treats you. Hygienists and office workers who are happy in their place of work will be happier to see you, more friendly, and definitely more helpful!

Even your first phone call should make you feel at ease! Whoever takes your call is your first point of contact in the office, and the way that person treats you will have a major impact. If the staff is helpful and kind, you will know that you are in good hands no matter what your concern!

4. How do You Feel When You Leave?

This might not seem like a big deal, but the way you feel when you leave a dental office is a very important indicator of your experience there. If you leave feeling like you’ve been lectured, confused about what is happening with your teeth, or afraid to ask any more questions, then that is not the right dental office for your family!

You should leave a dental office feeling like you have a good grasp of the health of your smile. You want to feel like you know what is going on, like you got the answers you needed, and like you could go back and ask more questions without being reprimanded!

Most people are anxious when they walk into a dental office, no matter how awesome the office is. The true test is to see how you feel when you walk out. If the dentist and staff have done their job, you’ll feel like an empowered member of the team working to improve the health of your smile!

5. Is There a Dental Warranty?

There is no requirement for a dentist to offer a dental warranty. Doctors aren’t forced to guarantee their work, and most choose not to! However, if your doctor is willing to offer a guarantee on their dental work, you will know that you’ve come to the right place.

After all, who wants to get dental work only to have it redone in a few years? A dental guarantee is a rare find, but it ensures that your dental work will be quality work done by a true professional who values his/her own work!

How to Find Such an Office?

Now that you have a better idea of what you’re looking for, how do you go about finding this dental office? How do you begin the search? We recommend that you begin by contacting us today!

We offer all of the things we have talked about today, and we want you to be able to experience the quality dental care that we have available right here at Plano Smile Studio. We hope to see you very soon!

A Guide to Plano, TX Dental Implants

We speak a lot about dental implants here at Plano Smile Studio. We know that there is tremendous power behind this restoration that can absolutely transform your smile! The problems that used to be the end of your smile are now simple bumps in the road.

In fact, the loss of teeth is incredibly common for older adults. We estimate that about two-thirds of adults will deal with some sort of tooth loss! Losing your adult teeth affects the way you eat, speak, and how confident you feel smiling!

Throughout the lifespan of our website, we have written several times about dental implants. We decided it was time to create a guide to implants by combining some of that old information into one place so that if you are considering a dental implant, you know just where to look!

Why a Dental Implant?

You might wonder why a dental implant is so great. After all, aren’t there other dental restorations that work just as well? Other restorations don’t have nearly the same results or strength. Let’s take a look at a few specific topics below.

Imagine a Comfortable Dental Appointment with Sedation

If you were to play a word association game, you would find that many people associate the word “dentist” with the words “pain” and “fear.” It’s a common problem in our society. In fact, fear keeps about a quarter of Americans home from the dentist each year! These folks could really benefit from the use of sedation dentistry.

The thought boggles our minds. Of course, any sort of medical treatment can be scary or nerve-wracking, but if you need treatment, you need treatment! You are already in pain and discomfort, and we can help!

Even so, many patients will wait until they cannot stand the pain any longer before coming into the office for treatment. We want to put an end to that because we know the value of a healthy smile. We know the value of a beautiful smile, and we want you to experience all of the confidence that comes with it!

The Dental Experience Before Sedation

A lot of the fear that you might be feeling comes from a rough history of dentistry. You might have seen movies or television shows that dramatized what it was like for patients to undergo dental procedures in centuries past. It wasn’t very pretty!

The bad reputation stuck. People who have never been to the dentist already fear the office based on what they have seen or heard from others, but dentistry has changed a lot in the past decades. Walking into a dental office now is a completely different experience from even 10 years ago! So even if you genuinely have had a terrible dental experience during your lifetime, don’t let it keep you from trying again at a better, more equipped office!

Prioritize Your Comfort for Your Next Appointment!

At your next dental appointment, we want to see you prioritize your comfort. We will be doing the same! We are here to make sure that you walk out of the office smiling! We do that with our fantastic staff, our gentle approach to dentistry, and our use of sedation dentistry!

Nitrous Oxide

The most common form of sedation is nitrous oxide. You might know it as laughing gas. We can administer laughing gas through a mask as you sit in our patient chair. You will feel an immediate release of tension, but you will still be aware of what is going on around you.

This is a fantastic option for patients who have mild to moderate anxiety. As soon as your procedure is complete and the mask removed, the effects of the sedation will wear off. You’ll be ready to go tackle the rest of your day with a smile on your face!

Oral Conscious Sedation

A second, more potent form of sedation is oral conscious sedation. This method actually allows you to begin your relaxation before you even arrive at the office! We will prescribe a pill for you to take about an hour before your procedure. You’ll ask someone to drive you to and from the office. Once you’re here, we will take you back and get to work!

Many patients who use this form of sedation are able to take a little catnap while we work. Others stay awake. In either case, you are generally aware of what is going on around you and are able to answer questions, but your body is completely free of anxiety and fear.

Comfort Means Better Health

Sedation is important because once you realize that you can have quality dental care while in complete comfort, you won’t be nearly as afraid to come in for your routine appointments! Coming in more often means better overall health! You no longer have anything to fear.

Straighten Your Smile Without Wire

Sometimes the solution is worse than the problem. For instance, eating healthy and losing weight would be great, but the idea of drinking a kale smoothie every morning for breakfast sounds worse than being few pounds overweight. Having your eight year old do dishes would teach him some work ethic and give you one less chore to do, but replacing all those broken dishes can put a strain on your budget.

The same is true when it comes to improving your smile. Here at Plano Smile Studio we know some people put off a cosmetic dental procedure because the process itself seems worse than the problem. For example, crooked teeth may keep you from showing off your smile, but traditional wire braces are not something to smile about, either.

What you may not know is that cosmetic dentistry has come a long way, and at our office in Plano, TX we offer a variety of modern dental procedures that will fix your problems without much hassle. Like Invisalign invisible brace, which will straighten your teeth without metal wire.

Why avoid getting braces?

Does the thought of a mouthful of wire braces seem worse than crooked teeth. The shiny smile. The food getting caught in the wires. The awkward cleaning. This would be enough to put anyone off of getting their teeth straightened, but it is especially daunting for an adult.

It is hard not be insecure about your appearance when your mouth looks like a teenager’s mouth. You wonder if co-workers will take you seriously. Will dates find you attractive? Will braces be more trouble than they are worth?

This could make the idea of straightening your teeth seem like something that just not worth it.

But It doesn’t have to be that way. Wire braces are old fashioned by today’s standards. Invisalign invisible braces are the clear alternative to the metal braces of the past.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign uses a series of clear plastic aligners, similar to retainers, to gradually move your teeth into place. They are removable and fit directly over your teeth. You will receive a new one every couple of weeks, so as adjust your teeth placement a little at a time.

The aligners are made from clear plastic that make speaking and eating easy and that are hard to see. The plastic is high quality and will not irritate the gums and mouth. Invisalign is a comfortable solution to your smile problem!

What does it offer?

Invisalign invisible braces will align your teeth without making you feel self-conscious about your appearance. So the solution will not be worse than the problem!

They are much easier to clean than old fashioned wire braces, which means less hassle for you. Also, you’ll have no food restrictions, so eat what you want (within reason).

They are much more comfortable than traditional braces. and don’t require constant attention.

And they are invisible! No need to hide your smile while fixing your smile.

What we will do you.

When you come to Plano Smile Studio, our friendly staff will make your comfortable as we perform a thorough examination and consultation.
If Invisalign is for you we will take 3D images of your teeth. These images will be used to created your aligners. They are custom designed for your teeth!

You will change to a new aligner about every two weeks until your teeth are aligned. The number of aligners varies for each patient.
At the end of the process you’ll have a beautiful straight smile to be proud of.

Happy Halloween from Plano Smile Studio

Happy Halloween from the Plano Smile Studio in Plano, TX! Are you prepared for a constant stream of trick or treaters at your door? You buy bags full of candies, maybe even springing for for full-size candy bars to hand out. If you’re a parent, you dutifully take your child door to door. You watch as they fill up their bags with candy and their eyes light up with joy.

Halloween is a wonderful time of year. But Halloween also contains dangers for you an your family. This danger does not manifest as man turning into a werewolf during a full moon, or even as alien beings beaming down from their UFO. The danger we’re describing is that of tooth decay.
Tooth decay is caused by the foods you eat, and the beverages you drink. Whenever you chew, some residue remains upon your teeth. This leftover food and drink attracts bacteria. Over time, this bacteria turns into an acidic film of plaque. Plaque works to dissolve holes into your teeth.

But what does that have to do with Halloween? It’s simply really, sugared foods tend to attract the most bacteria of any food you eat. We often treat patients in the months following Halloween; children are especially prone to having cavities during this season.

But that’s not to say that you can’t or shouldn’t enjoy Halloween candy this year. Moderation is the key to everything in life. But there are a few additional things you can keep in mind to make sure you keep your family’s mouth decay-free during this holiday.

Now is the time of year to be strict about your children’s brushing and flossing regime. They need to be brushing their teeth at least twice a day, for two minutes at a time. Two minutes can seem like an eternity for children. But the fluoride in toothpaste needs time to take effect. You may want to consider buying a toothbrush with a built-in timer for your children. There are many inexpensive options at your local grocery store.

In addition, make sure they are flossing every day. Anytime is a good time to floss; flossing ensures that candy isn’t stuck in the hard to reach places in their mouth. Flossing helps remove plaque from teeth, and prevent the development of cavities and other decay in between their teeth. If your children struggle with floss, consider buying a floss pick.

Everyone should also be on alert when flossing. If it has been a long-time since you flossed with regularity, you may experience minor bleeding of gums during the first couple weeks of flossing. But if bleeding persists past that time, be sure and contact our office. Bleeding gums may be a sign of gum disease or other ailment.

Another easy trick is to serve water with candy, instead of soda. A nice glass of water can held wash away much of the bacteria left by candy. In addition, many public supplies of water contain fluoride which works to strengthen their enamel. Plus, you reduce the risk of tooth decay from drinking soda.

All soda, no matter the brand or sugar content, is extremely acidic. The acidity of soda can wear away at the enamel of your teeth. This is extremely dangerous if you are also eating candy at the same time. Bacteria can be attracted to the weakened area of your enamel and quickly cause decay.

This time of year is also an ideal time to make sure you’ve schedule a dental appointment for everyone in your family. Routine dental appointments allow us to clean your teeth and check for early signs of tooth decay. This helps prevent a small problem from turning into a larger one. The American Dental Association recommends scheduling an appointment every six months.

So make an appointment at the Plano Smile Studio in Plano, TX, today. You can reach our office by calling at 972-398-2550.

Ditch Your Dentures – Why Dental Implants May Be Right For You

Are you living with dentures that you hate? It’s time to upgrade. Call your Plano, TX dentist to learn more about dental implants today.

At Plano Smile Studio, we believe that if a tooth can be saved, it should be. But sometimes that just can’t happen. Sometimes the tooth just falls out or it needs to be extracted. If that happens, we’re here to help.

The Ups And Downs Of Dentures

Implants are sometimes used as an alternative to dentures. Sometimes, they are even used to support dentures! However if you are currently living with dentures that you hate, implants can be the solution. Implants can help you be comfortable and confident.

The problem with dentures is that they aren’t a permanent part of your mouth. They only sit upon your gums and jaw bone. There are two major problems with this:

Pain. Sometimes, dentures just aren’t fitted correctly. But you shouldn’t have to live with it! Ill-fitting dentures often slip and slide in your mouth, rubbing your gums raw. To have to constantly adjust your teeth is a major pain – figuratively and literally! Implant eliminate the possibility of slipping and rubbing, as they are fixed permanently in place.

Inconvenience. Even if your dentures ARE fitted correctly, you still have to be careful about what you eat! Because dentures aren’t fixed permanently to your jaw, the dental adhesive that holds the dentures in place can come loose while enjoying a meal. Eating something sticky or difficult to chew is downright impossible. Implants provide a sturdy, stable replacement of your natural teeth, allowing you to eat whatever you want.

While dentures are a less-invasive and potentially more cost-effective option, implants are an investment in the health of your mouth and overall well-being. In addition to helping your mouth stay as healthy as possible, implants can give you the confidence and comfort of having your natural teeth. They are even just as easy to clean as your natural teeth! No soaking your dentures to rid them of bacteria, no more messy adhesive – just brush your implants like normal.

It’s about time that we tell you more about how dentures work.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a substitute for your natural teeth, just like dentures. But unlike dentures, they reside in your gums, just like your natural teeth! Implants are made up of three separate pieces.

The implant is a metal piece that is attached to your jaw bone. It is surgically inserted into your gum and becomes a permanent part of your mouth.

After that, a crown (an artificial tooth) is attached to the abutment or post. That post is then screwed into the implant that has been placed in your gum.

It is a fairly simple process to undergo. Sometimes an implant can be placed in just one visit – other times it may take a few months. The length of time required is dependent upon the complexity of your specific situation. Regardless of how long it takes, you can rest assured that we will make sure you are as comfortable as possible throughout the entire process.

Dental implants look and act just like your natural teeth. They are custom made to fit your mouth, so they will blend right in with your existing teeth. In addition to looking great, they have almost the entire chewing power of your natural teeth. So, unlike with dentures, you will be able to eat whatever you want!

AND because they are placed directly into your gums and fused with the bone, they help to prevent bone loss! When you are missing teeth, your jaw bone begins to deteriorate. By investing in implants, you are investing in the long term health of your entire mouth.

Implants are a simple, permanent replacement for your natural teeth. Whether you need just one or a whole mouth-full, we can make sure you have teeth that look and feel natural. We want to help you live your life to the fullest.

3 Reasons to Choose Invisalign Instead of Braces

Greetings Plano! Welcome back to the ongoing dental health blog of the Plano Smile Studio. At our comfortable and modern office, we pride ourselves on offering comprehensive dental solutions for patients in the greater Dallas-area. One of the most popular solutions we offer is Invisalign orthodontics for adult and teenaged patients.

Recently, a mother and her teenaged daughter came into our office. Both of them were suffering from crooked teeth which made them embarrassed to smile. They had both considered traditional braces but had some hesitation about undergoing traditional orthodontic treatment. At Plano Smile Studio in Plano, TX, we were happy to get them on the path towards healthier and more attractive smiles.

The mother was worried that her employees wouldn’t take her seriously at her small business if she was wearing braces; her daughter didn’t want to look silly at her high school. So we sat-down and evaluated their smiles for Invisalign and Invisalign Teen. We found that not only were they both candidates for Invisalign, we also they were extremely excited about the numerous benefits offered by Invisalign.

In the next two posts of our dental health blog, we’re going to look at some of the many reasons our patients choose Invisalign and Invisalign Teen instead of traditional metal braces. Let’s get started!

Reason #1: Invisalign Offers More Comfortable Treatment

Traditional braces use antiquated technology to realign your teeth. Metal brackets are bonded to the front of your teeth, and wires and bands are then used to straighten your teeth. Although traditional braces are effective, they can also be painful.

Many wearers of traditional adult braces complain about a pulling sensation on their teeth. This discomfort is increased during the numerous adjustments required with traditional adult braces. The brackets can also scratch the inside of their mouth, leaving them with bloodied lips and tongues.

Invisalign and Invisalign Teen are the next generation of braces. Instead of uncomfortable metal brackets and wires, Invisalign and Invisalign Teen use clear aligners to gently reposition teeth. The custom aligners are smooth and won’t cut up the inside of your mouth. In addition, there are no painful adjustments required with Invisalign or Invisalign Teen; you just move onto your next aligner.

Reason #2: Invisalign is More Attractive

The appearance of traditional metal braces are generally the biggest complaint among patients undergoing traditional orthodontic treatment. Older patients are worried that they’ll look foolish in the workplace. They dread the idea of walking into their workplace with a mouth full of metal and wires. Braces are associated with immaturity, which can translate into their appearance.

For teenaged patients, the concerns are extremely similar. A sad truth is that high school can be environment filled with bullying and teasing from their peers. Many teenagers are worried that they’ll get made fun for wearing traditional braces.

Invisalign and Invisalign Teen are a much more attractive option for patients concerned about their appearance. Both Invisalign systems use a series of transparent aligners to correct misaligned teeth. Invisalign is designed to be invisible in your smile; your orthodontic treatment can be a secret between you and your dentist!

Reason #3: Invisalign is Faster

Traditional orthodontics require a serious commitment in cost and time. Most patients have to wear their uncomfortable metal brackets and wires for two years or more. That’s two years to worry about what you can and can’t eat, and two years to worry about looking silly. It’s an extremely serious commitment.

Invisalign and Invisalign Teen can greatly reduce that amount of time you spending undergoing orthodontic treatment. On average, treatment with Invisalign takes about a year. That’s about twice as fast!

The total duration of treatment depends on the orthodontic issues Invisalign is being used to correct. Some patients wear their Invisalign aligners for less than a year; some patients have to wear their aligners for slightly longer. However, almost all patients can shorten their treatment time by choosing Invisalign.

Dietary Fiber Helps Your Teeth

Hello. Welcome to the regular blog of Plano Smile Studio, where we make it our mission to keep Plano, TX informed on the important matters of oral health and modern dentistry. In our last blog we wrote about the importance of a well balanced diet, and we warned against the the dangers of fad diets that restrict entire food groups to the point that you are actually damaging your health more than helping it.

In this installment we would like the shed some light on one of the most important ingredients to a healthy, well balanced diet, and that is dietary fiber. High fiber diets have been shown to be very beneficial to all the major systems of your body. There are two types of dietary fiber, soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber breaks down in water and helps to process sugar, as well as protect your heart health. Insoluble fiber, does not break down in fiber, so it helps to push food and waste through your gut, and it aids in digestive disorders.

Dietary fiber also benefits your oral health. Chewing foods that are high in fiber boosts your mouth’s output of saliva, and saliva is your number one defense against oral ailments like tooth decay and gum disease. Tooth decay is caused by bacteria called dental caries, and dental caries thrives in a dry mouth. Saliva keeps your mouth moist and makes it harder for plaque to stick to your teeth, and since dental caries like to hide out on plaque, this give the bacteria fewer places to hide.

It probably goes without saying that in order to chew foods that are high in dietary fiber, you need healthy teeth. That is the symbiotic relationship between oral health and dietary fiber; it is hard to have one without the other. But if you take care of your teeth, they will take care of you by making it so you can eat all the healthy food you want and need to.

General Health Benefits of Dietary Fiber

Most people probably think of stomach ailments, like constipation when they think about fiber. It’s something old people need to worry about, not anyone else. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Dietary fiber provides health benefits for people of all ages. In fact, a recent Harvard study revealed that those who have a diet high in fiber are 40% less likely to get heart disease, or high blood pressure. The same study showed that those who don’t have enough fiber in their diet are twice as likely to get type 2 diabetes.

Dietary fiber helps slows your body’s absorption of sugar, which is why it is helpful in the fight against diabetes, but it is also helpful in the fight against obesity. Most diets focus on what not to eat in order to lose pounds, but evidence shows that what you eat can be just as important, as is the case with dietary fiber.

Choose Real Food Over Supplements

You have probably see all the fiber supplements on your grocery store shelf, you don’t even have to go to a health food store to find them. These supplements have their place, but they are not healthy as actually eating the fruits and vegetables and nuts that contain high amounts of dietary fiber. As a matter of fact, some of the fiber powders and gummies are flavored with sugar, so that means those supplements are bad for teeth.

Give the Gift of Professional Teeth Whitening | Plano, TX

Greeting Plano! Welcome back to the ongoing dental health blog of the Plano Smile Studio. We normally like to use this blog to tell you about all the exciting cosmetic and restorative dental treatments available at our comfortable and modern office. But today we’re going to take a slightly different approach.

The holidays are quickly approaching! Have you finished buying presents for all of your loved ones? Or is there one person on that list that just seems impossible to buy for? You want to get them something that shows you care, a thoughtful present for all they do for you. Yet you return from all the department stores with empty hands, unable to find something special enough for your loved one.

At the Plano Smile Studio, we have a suggestion: professional teeth whitening! At our comfortable and modern office in Plano, teeth whitening can help a loved one achieve a smile as white as snow! (Even if we don’t get a whole lot of snow in these parts.)

In this post we’re going to look at several aspects of teeth whitening. We’ll look at the cost of teeth whitening in Plano. We’ll also discuss different teeth whitening treatments and teeth whitening methods available in Plano. Teeth whitening can make an excellent gift for the person in your life that just seems impossible to buy for.

Teeth can become stained by a variety of factors. Your loved one probably knows to brush and floss their teeth everyday. But other factors can stain and discolor their teeth. If they’re getting a little older, their teeth might become discolored by the simple process of aging. Our your loved one may have a genetic background that makes them likely to suffer from stained or discolored teeth.

Your loved one may also have stained teeth due to some of their dietary or lifestyle choices. Drinking coffee or tea on a regular basis can stain the teeth of your loved one due to the tannins in the beverages. A regular glass of red wine can also discolor their teeth due to the natural dyes from the grapes. If they smoke cigarettes, use e-cigarettes, chew tobacco, or vape, their teeth can also become discolored due to the tobacco, nicotine, and other chemicals in those products.

At the Plano Smile Studio, we’re proud to use industry-leading teeth whitening methods. We offer teeth whitening treatments here in our Plano office, and teeth whitening treatments which can be performed at home. Both of our teeth whitening methods can whiten teeth several shades, and leave your loved one with a beautiful smile that they’re proud to display.

Our teeth whitening treatments are customized to fit the individual needs of each patient. We’ve helped a countless number of patients whiten their teeth. In fact, we often receive many referrals for our teeth whitening services from patients who have undergone teeth whitening treatment at our Plano office.

Our most popular teeth whitening method is the Zoom! system. This in-office treatment takes only about an hour; your loved one will leave our office with smile that’s many shades whiter. To apply Zoom! whitening, we’ll begin by removing plaque from your loved one’s teeth. We then apply a special whitening gel to your loved one’s teeth, and use the patented Zoom! light to activate the whitening gel.

With Zoom!, your loved one will undergo three, fifteen minute whitening treatments in one appointment at our Plano office. Not only will they leave our office with a much whiter smile, we’ll also provide you with take-home whitening trays and gel to touch-up their smile. We’re proud to offer the Zoom! teeth whitening method for only $495! (Priced individually, these services would cost $1,200.)

We also offer NiteWhite ACP teeth whitening at our Plano office. We’ll start by removing any plaque from your teeth. Then we’ll make of your loved one’s teeth to create customized whitening trays. These customized trays ensure even whitening in far less time than over-the-counter whitening treatments. We’ll provide prescription strength whitening gel, and your loved one will see amazing results in about two weeks. Priced separately, this teeth whitening treatment would normally cost $449. It’s available at our Plano only for only $299!

Don’t Put Up With Slippery Dentures

Many patients will come to a day when they need to make a decision about how to completely restore their natural teeth. Dentures are a great restoration tool, but they have some problems as well. Even with those problems, dentures tend to be a popular choice. Patients love the ease of caring for their dentures as well as the confidence they feel when smiling with their new mouth! In many cases, dentures look better than their natural teeth! So what happens when those dentures start to become uncomfortable?

Now that the patient is wearing dentures full-time, he (or she) might start noticing some discomfort from their dentures. Dentures tend to slip and slide around the mouth leading to painful, sore gums and possibly an embarrassing “lost my teeth” moment! The culprit isn’t the dentures themselves, but the fact that your jawbone changes shape once your natural teeth have all been removed. Over time, your dentures will stop fitting correctly, and you’ll need some form of dental help to get your dentures to a place of comfort again. That’s where we step in.

An Implant Solution for Dentures

Dental implants are normally used to replace missing teeth, and we can definitely do that in our office, but implants are also available to stabilize your dentures! We can place a few implants that will hold your dentures in place. You’ll walk out of our office with a secure, steady bite that will enable you to eat more of the foods you love without worrying about your denture losing it’s place in your mouth! This added confidence can be a game-changer for many denture wearers!

Don’t accept that your dentures will slip around. Do something about it! Use implant retained dentures to secure your smile so that you don’t have to worry about your dentures anymore! Contact us today to learn more about this procedure, and let us show you how comfortable your dentures could be!

A Few Words of Advice for Denture Wearers

Now that you have your dentures, you might think your time spent worrying about your teeth is over! Unfortunately, that’s just not the case. Even though your natural teeth are gone, there is still a lot to do and a lot to consider regarding your dentures. We’ve put together a list of three things we wish every denture wearer knew!

1) It Takes Time to Learn a New Skill

Like anything else, learning to use your dentures will take some time. Your muscles are learning new movements, and your brain is learning to hold those dentures in place automatically! Give yourself some time to adjust.

2) Don’t Settle For a Poor Fit

We see patients who are so excited to have their dentures that they don’t really care about the fit. We’re glad that you are happy, but in order to remain happy with your dentures, we need to make sure they fit well! As time goes on, that fit will change, so it’s important that you maintain routine appointments to adjust your dentures.

3) There Are Always Other Options

If you just can’t get the hang of your dentures, or you aren’t pleased with the way that they fit, please consider other options! We have some great implant retained dentures options that will give you a more comfortable and functional fit!

Wearing dentures is an exciting time for you. It’s like a new lease on your smile, and we hope that you enjoy this new stage of your life. We also hope that you get to know your dentures and allow us to help you keep them functional. Contact us to set up your next appointment. Let us know how we can help you make your dentures more comfortable!

Using the Grocery to Improve Oral Health

As the member of your house who purchases groceries, let us begin by saying that we know what a big task you undertake! It doesn’t matter if you shop once a week or once a month, that trip isn’t easy. It’s even more difficult when you are trying to purchase healthy foods for your family. We can’t make the task any easier, but we can give you some tips for purchasing foods that are good for your family’s oral health as well as the health of the rest of their bodies!

Picking the Best Beverage

Choosing beverages is difficult because the drinks that seem like a good idea are often full of sugar. Juice and sports drinks, for example, have way more sugar than they have nutrients. It’s best for young smiles to drink plenty of water and milk throughout the day.

Teeth-Healthy Snacks

Reaching for crackers or pretzels for a snack doesn’t benefit your teeth. The chewy particles get stuck throughout your teeth giving bacteria a chance to feed. Instead, reach for crunchy vegetables or fruit that will actually scrub your teeth while you chew!

Mineral-Packed Protein

Lean protein and cheeses are important for the strength of your teeth. As you chew, your saliva actually starts to break down some of those minerals and puts them directly into the enamel through a process called remineralization!

Use the grocery to your advantage by selecting foods that are good for your family from head to toe! Contact us for more tips about using food to strengthen your smile, and check back in on Friday for information about making water the most attractive drink in the fridge!

Three Reasons to Love Invisalign

Orthodontics, as a whole, have a bad reputation. People immediately think about metal brackets, wires, headgear, etc, and they don’t want to even think about wearing that, especially as an adult. There is another option, called Invisalign Orthodontics, that uses clear plastic aligners to do the orthodontic work. People love the change, but it’s about more than just the look! Here are a few more reasons to love Invisalign!

No Reason to Fret the Cleaning Process

With metal braces, cleaning is a pain! You have to do all sorts of picking and scrubbing, but Invisalign makes it easy. Since they’re clear removable aligners, you can take them out while you care for your teeth, and then run your toothbrush over the aligner, inside and out. A quick rinse, and you’re ready to put it back in!

You Can Skip the Wax

Unlike metal braces that rub and poke against your cheeks and lips, clear aligners are smooth. They are completely comfortable against the soft tissues of your mouth, eliminating the need for wax.

Every Picture Will Show Confidence

Every picture taken of you with your Invisalign will show a smiling person who is confident. There will be no closed lips or attempt to hide your braces. You’ll be happy because you’ll know that no one can see your orthodontics!

With every new patient trying Invisalign® Orthodontics, we hear new reasons to love this product. We know that you’ll love it, too! Contact us today to set up a consultation. Let us know how we can help you get the smile of your dreams!

Beating Bruxism With Simple Solutions

If you catch yourself clenching your teeth while you work, or even grinding them together when you deal with a stressful situation, you might be showing signs of bruxism. Bruxism is another work for teeth grinding, and while you might notice it during the day, it tends to show itself more at night while you are sleeping. Bruxism can cause a lot of damage if it is allowed to continue. Because of this, we recommend that you try some of the preventive dental care solutions below:

Relaxation Techniques – Since bruxism is often associated with stress, we recommend practicing relaxation techniques before bed or while you are at work. Deep breathing and meditation can often relax your muscles, eliminating the impulse to bite down.

Warm Compresses – Another method for relaxing muscles is with a warm compress. Place it along your jawbone from your ear down to your chin to relax the muscles engaged in clenching your teeth. You can do this before bed or when you feel stressed.

Nightguards – Because bruxism normally occurs at night, we recommend using a nightguard while you sleep. This gives your teeth something to bite down on without causing tooth on tooth friction which can injure your teeth.

Bruxism is an issue that you’ll want to deal with sooner rather than later. Your jaw can experience serious damage if you aren’t able to stop grinding or clenching your teeth. Contact us today to set up an appointment where we can look for signs of bruxism. We can also give you more tips for ending this bad habit.

The Benefits of Preventative Dentistry

Hello again, Plano! Today brings you the newest entry in the dental health blog of the Plano Smile Studio. We want to take today’s blog post to talk about one of most important services: Preventive Dentistry.

Preventative Dentistry starts with educating yourself about the dangers of tooth decay, and ways to lower your risk of tooth decay. Did you know, for example, that older adults have a heighten risk of cavities?

As you age, your gums recede much like your hairline. This is a natural process and one which cannot entirely be prevented. The process leaves more of your teeth exposed to bacteria, and much of this area may be in places where you’re not used to brushing. Cavities don’t just happen to kids and teenagers; in fact anyone with natural teeth in their mouth is at risk for cavities.

The Dangers of Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is a progressive disease. What starts as some undigested food on your teeth turns into plaque. Plaque can cause cavities or cause a build-up of tartar on your teeth. Tartar can cause Gum Disease and other problems. Untreated cavities can eventually kill teeth, or force the removal of dental pulp and nerves inside of them.

Decay happens little by little, every time you eat food or drink a beverage. As you eat, little bits of food cling to your teeth. This bits can be so small that they’re not noticeably by the naked eye. But they’re there, attracting all sorts of bacteria in your mouth.

The bacteria accumulates a turns into a sort of acidic slime. This acidic slime is called plaque. Plaque looks bad on your teeth and leaves nasty stains. Plaque also slowly dissolves the enamel of your teeth, leaving painful holes called cavities.

Cavities, also called Dental Caries, are essentially small holes in your teeth. Your teeth is covered in a layer of protective enamel. When a cavity develops, the inner and more vulnerable parts of teeth are exposed to bacteria and decay.

Exposed dental pulp, dental dentin, and dental nerves can be incredibly painful. They make you suffer from a toothache, and hurt whenever they come into contact with hot beverages or cold beverages. This sort of decay often requires a removal of the affected dental pulp and nerves, called a root canal.

Root canals aren’t painful; root canals are also safe and routine. However, it is easier to prevent the need to have a root canal. This can save you money and time on our office.

The Benefits of Preventive Dentistry

Preventive Dentistry can stop tooth decay right in its tracks. During a routine appointment at the Plano Smile Studio, you can get your teeth cleaned and your mouth examined for decay. We also offer a wide arrange of other Preventive Dentistry services, which would like to explain in further detail.

Teeth Cleaning: During a teeth cleaning, a skilled member of our top-notch dental hygiene team will carefully and skillfully remove built up tartar and plaque from your teeth. The American Dental Association recommends that you have your teeth cleaned in this manner at least twice a year. The removal of plaque and tartar prevent cavities and gum disease from developing.

Dental Exam: During a dental exam we will screen your teeth for any and all signs of decay. We also offer state-of-the-art digital x-rays which emit far less radiation than traditional x-ray devices; these digital radiographs allow us to notice any early signs of decay. In addition, we screen you for gum disease and Oral Cancer. We’ll perform a bite analysis and let you know about any corrective or cosmetic services which could benefit you.

Fluoride Treatments: A fluoride treatment is an excellent way to prevent tooth decay. We offer fluoride treatments after your teeth cleaning. Fluoride works to strengthen your enamel, and protect you from cavities.

Dental Sealants: A dental sealant is a quick and painless resin which can applied to the pits and ridges of your teeth. These sealants help prevent plaque and tartar from building up on these vulnerable areas of your teeth.

Know How to Keep a Healthy Smile With Diabetes

November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and we’d like to take some time to talk about how living with diabetes can affect your oral health. Patients living with diabetes already have a lot on their plate. They keep track of numbers and what they eat all day long. They are constantly on alert for changes in their bodies, and the smile is not exempt from that attention. Let’s take a look at the relationship between diabetes and oral health, because the connection is very real.

The Risk

The number one risk between diabetes and oral health is the fact that diabetes patients have a lowered resistance to infection. One of the most common infections in the United States is gum disease, which means that patients with diabetes will be at more risk for developing gum disease. If it isn’t prevented or caught early, these patients will risk the loss of their teeth.

Prevention

In order to keep this from happening, patients need to closely follow the preventive measures of oral hygiene. This begins on a daily basis with your daily oral hygiene routine. Flossing, brushing, and using a mouth rinse will each work to remove dangerous bacteria from your mouth. You will also need to maintain routine dental exams and cleanings every six months. For patients struggling to keep gum disease under control, we might recommend that you come in every 3-4 months.

Gum disease requires a lot of attention from the patient, and there’s rarely any sort of let up. Prevention is the name of the game, and preventive oral health care will protect your teeth from oral infections like gum disease. Contact us for more information, and let us know how we can help you feel more confident in your healthy smile.

Protect Your Dental Implant Investment

Waking up the morning after you’ve lost an adult tooth can be a bit of a shock. There will be no money waiting under your pillow, and you won’t have another tooth waiting to take over the empty space. You’ll soon find that losing an adult tooth will result in discomfort, negative attention, and a bill for a restoration to be placed. It’s not all bad news, though, because we can give you a restoration that you’ll never have to worry about ever again: a dental implant!

When we say you’ll never have to worry about your implant again, we are making an assumption that you plan to take care of your implant. Flossing, brushing, and routine appointments are an important part of caring for any restoration, but especially a dental implant. There is one very common condition that will put your restoration at risk, and it usually occurs when you fail to care for your teeth.

Gum Disease: The Great Risk

A gum disease infection is very serious for patients with an implant restoration. If gum disease is allowed to progress deep into the jawbone, it will pose a serious risk for your implant. Gum disease weakens the bone until it can no longer hold the implant, causing you to lose your implant and the investment. Preventing gum disease is as simple as caring for your teeth through daily oral hygiene and routine appointments.

Making the decision to invest in a dental implants is one of the best decisions you can make when you need a restoration. However, it requires care if you want to get your full money’s worth. Contact us today to learn more about how to care for your implant. We would love to help you have a healthier restoration experience.

A New Approach to Your Routine

Your daily oral hygiene routine is unique. You’ve learned tips and tricks for doing things throughout the years, and you’ve tried to make it as efficient as you can. In many cases, however, that “efficiency” is actually taking away from your ability to keep your teeth healthy. Let’s take a look at common aspects of your daily hygiene routine and how you can improve that time spent.

Flossing Effectively – The sad truth is that many Americans don’t floss at all, and most of those who do use floss don’t use it effectively. Floss should curve around your tooth to cover most of the surface of your tooth so that it can remove about 40% of the bacteria from your tooth surface.

Brushing Thoroughly – Many people brush all of their teeth, but they don’t spend enough time doing it. Brushing your teeth should take no shorter than two full minutes. Try keeping track of how much time you spend brushing, and increase that time to two minutes so that you thoroughly cover all surfaces in your mouth.

Rinsing Efficiently – Some patients choose to use mouth rinse, which we encourage. However, if you are going to use mouth rinse, you should use a rinse that is most efficient. Antiseptic rinses are best for removing bacteria and protecting your teeth from gum disease and decay.

Almost all of us practice some form of oral hygiene routine, but not all of us take full advantage of that time. Think through your own routine, and see how you can improve it! Contact us today for more ideas. We would love to set up an appointment and discuss your routine with you!

Three Ways to Prepare Your Smile For the Holidays

The holiday season has officially begun! Over the next month, you will attend party after party and see lots of family and friends. We’ll match the bonding material to the shade of your teeth to ensure that your look blends in perfectly!
